AGRICULTURE

On about ten hectares, an agroforestry project will be developed, mixing fruit trees, shrubs, and vegetable crops. A plan based on a mixture of varieties and scales of plants will allow for the implementation of a microclimate, thereby contributing to the establishment of a common protection system for the varieties.
The crops will be primarily dedicated to the eco-hotel’s own consumption, and any surplus will be distributed to local cooperatives. Part of the crops will be focused on cultivating indigenous plants of Arrábida, aimed at reinforcing fragile areas, as well as for the extraction of plant materials for hygiene and cosmetic products of Etosoto.
The operation will be adjacent to an agricultural building, where various transformations of the harvested products will be carried out in order to enhance their value and address issues related to perishability
This component is accompanied by the desire to raise awareness of the benefits of an autonomous system that is less dependent on industrial systems. Travelers will have access to a variety of activities within the framework of the agroforestry project and the transformation of crops.
Active conservation of the flora is an important component of the project. A large part of the land features a rich diversity of vegetation, with a maquis consisting of very specific combinations of plants and flowering plains. There are over fifty species of medicinal plants present.
On the other hand, some invasive plants, brought to this territory by the wind, are colonizing and gradually damaging this original ecosystem. Notably, Acacia dealbata, Carpobrotus edulis, Arundo donax, as well as the uncontrolled growth of Scots pines.
A maintenance plan has been established, including maintenance actions and mapping work, allowing for the preservation of ecological balances. These actions will be carried out permanently and in the long term. Travelers will be invited to participate in these tasks, which will be linked to an awareness and learning activity about the local flora.
